General introduction to acids, bases and salts .

Acids

HCl(hydrochloric acid)

H₂SO₄(sulphuric acid)

H₂CO₃(Carbonic acid)

CH₃COOH(acetic acid)

1) Inorganic acids                          2)  Organic acids

1) Strong acids                                2)  Weak acids

Example

  • Oxalic acid ,
Example
  • Lactic acid ,

Uses of acids

  1. Acids are used in the chemicals and fertilizers
  2. Acids are used in the production of explosive, oil purification, medicines.
  3. Dil.H2SO4 is used in batteries.
  4. HOCl(Hypochlorous acid ) is used in making of white paper from wood pulp.

Bases

  • Sodium hydroxide (NaOH)
  • Potassium hydroxide (KOH)
  • Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂)
  • Magnesium hydroxide(Mg(OH)₂)
  • Ammonium hydroxide (NH₄OH)
  • Ammonia (NH₃)

  • Ammonium hydroxide (NH₄OH)
  • Ammonia (NH₃)

1) Strong base                   2) Weak base

1) Bases                              2) Alkalis

  • Baking soda (NaHCO3)and baking powder (sodium potassium tartrate)
  • Washing soda (Na2CO3)
  • Soap ( Sodium salt of fatty acid) and detergents (Sodium salt of sulphonoic acid)
  • Antacids (Mg(OH)2)
  • White wash (Ca(OH)2)
  • Shampoo (KOH)
  • Mostly cleaning substance

Uses of bases

  1. Bases are used as cleansing stuffs.
  2. Used as antacids.
  3. Used for making of chemicals.
  4. Used for making fertilizers.
  5. Used to maintain PH of soil.
  6. Used in pulping in paper industries.

Difference between acid and base

AcidsBases
They are sour in taste They are bitter in taste and slippery in touch
Acid molecules contains Hydrogen ions (H⁺) as a main constituent.Base molecules contains Hydroxyl ion (OH⁻) as a main constituent.
Generally acids reacts with metals to give hydrogen gas.Generally bases do not reacts with metals.
It turns blue litmus to red.It turns red litmus to blue.
HCl, H2SO4,H2CO3 are some examples of acids.NaOH, KOH, Ca(OH)₂ are some examples of bases.

Salts

Example
NaCl  -          Na⁺(basic radical)                            Cl⁻(acid radical)

CaSO₄ -       Ca⁺² (basic radical)                            SO₄⁻²(acid radical)

जैसे:- CH₃COOH + NaOH ➞ CH₃COONa + H₂O
जैसे:- HCl + NaOH ➞ NaCl + H₂O

NaCl(sodium chloride) an important salt

Some properties and uses of common salt.

  1. Common salt is a colourless crystalline ionic compound.
  2. There is no water of crystallization in its crystalline structure.
  3. They are salty in taste and neutral in nature.
  4. PH value is 7.
  5. This is used for the production of other chemicals like NaOH, NaHCO3,Na2CO3.
  6. It's melt at 800℃, this is called fused Back.
  7. When fused Nacl is electrolysed, chlorine gas is released at anode and liquid sodium metal at cathode.
  8. Aqueous solution of NaCl is called Brine.
  9. 25% aqueous solution of NaCl is called saturated brine.
